Character Info; Source work and author: OC Door: Marvel. Character Journal name: ~alittlered Character Name: Maddie Kate "MK" Robinson. Character Age: 26. Character Played By: Alison Sudol Character History and Personality: Joe Robinson never wanted a family. A drunk and a gambler, he was hardly the type that wanted to come home to a nagging wife or a wailing baby. Even from a young age, he never wanted the responsibility of taking care of himself, let alone others. He wanted to focus on himself and his work (he claimed to be a painter for a living). He enjoyed the enigma of being a tortured soul and did little to fix himself, claiming it was all for his art. Still, he found himself in relationship after relationship with women because he needed them to take care of him. None would stick though -- Joe was an abusive boyfriend (physically, emotionally and verbally) and most were smart enough to get the hell out of dodge before it got any worse. Every single one except Diana McHale. Addicted to crack-cocaine and a penchant to live life on the wild side, Diana also suffered from self-destructive tendencies. She ran away from home at seventeen to be an actress, but fell straight into the arms of Joe. Though still incredibly self-centered, he was intrigued by the young girl, almost ten years his junior, and the two began a tumultuous relationship. Frankly, both were addicted to the chaos each caused the other; Diana and Joe fed off of pain and hurt and planned to continue the cycle until it killed one of them. Until Diana became pregnant with her first daughter, Gina. Two years after came their second-born, Maddie Kate. Maddie Kate Robinson was born on September 23rd, 1992, in Chicago, IL. During the time following Gina and Maddie Kate's births, Joe and Diana tried their best to stay clean for their daughters and even tied the knot. Neither daughter were aware of their parents' behavior prior to their births, and Joe and Diana were determined to keep it that way. Joe picked up a job as a professor of art in the Columbia College to support his sudden family. Diana, meanwhile, kicked her habit and spent all her time at home. The fiery duo calmed their antics down long enough for Gina to enter elementary school, but a slip-up by Joe turned into a relapse which cost him his job. Infuriated, he delved even further into his drinking and began to abuse his wife again. Like a domino effect, both slipped into their former habits -- Joe, his drinking and abusive nature, and Diana, her dependency on drugs and her husband's abuse. This time, however, they had their daughters in the mix, and neither girl was immune to the effects. Both Gina and Maddie Kate were fiercely abused verbally by their father and ignored by their mother. Maddie Kate, for her part, tried to cope as best they could with the new shift of dynamics in the house, but sometimes found it difficult to keep her home life separate from everything else. It's always hard on a child to live in such a chaotic household, but Maddie Kate tried her best to not let others know. Even as the tiniest little thing, Maddie Kate realized her life was a little bit of this: bad before good. After Joe was fired, the Robinsons moved from town to town as he tried to find work again, or at least sell his paintings. When neither were successful, he grew even more frustrated and turned to hitting his daughters in addition to his wife. Maddie Kate, now school-aged, would come to class covered in bruises or with sore arms, but would use her exuberant, goofy personality to mask the hurt she suffered. No one could ever tell that something was wrong with Maddie Kate, even her closest friends. She was wonderful, she was happy, she couldn't be going through anything that bad, right? The constant moving and demeaning treatment, however, took tolls on the Robinson family. Gina retreated to her studies and gymnastics and Diana fell further into her drug habits. Joe hit the bottle just as hard. And little Maddie Kate, who wanted nothing more than a normal life, tried her hardest to just cope. The Robinsons were a mess, a suffering mess, but no one could really stop it. It wasn't until one night, when Maddie Kate received a very noticeable black eye did Diana snap into her maternal instincts; she realized how harmful that environment was for her daughters and packed them up to move in with her Aunt Wilma in Queens, NY. Gina was ten, and Maddie Kate was eight. Queens was the breath of fresh air the women of the Robinson family needed. Finally, a glimmer of safety and normalcy graced their lives, and each could truly live a life they wanted. Gina continued with her gymnastics, and Diana began the arduous process of cleaning up her act by enrolling in Narcotics Anonymous. Maddie Kate, in particular, flourished astonishingly. The girl could always deal with the insanity of her home life as much as any kid could, but when given the chance to actually settle somewhere, the little redhead with a great smile and even greater attitude really shined. She wasn't the most academically gifted, but she applied herself to school as much as she could. Mostly, she slipped easily into the role of the popular girl, the girl who could make friends with anyone and who was beloved by so many. The young girl was friendly with just about everyone in school, even those people turned their heads from. Simon Jones was one of those people. A brash boy with tiny build and a big mouth to compensate and a fight in his bones, some people regarded him as a tad weird or violent, but Maddie Kate didn't mind that much. He was a nice boy and someone who stuck up for the other kids, something she really admired, even as a little one. And he was funny, too, and someone she could find herself relying on in a way she'd never been able to before. They became close, and Maddie Kate considered him her best friend, and she wanted to stay his friend forever. (She, truly, was the type of girl to have a hundred best friends, and each one of them meant just as much as the next one.) Everything was wonderful and great, and she moved seamlessly from elementary school to middle school. But then it always happens for Maddie Kate Robinson: the bad before good. Middle school was just as great for her as elementary school. Well, at least the first few years. When Maddie Kate, who had begun to go by MK during this time, reached eighth grade, Joe reemerged in their lives. Unlike his family, he had a couple of rough preceding years -- his drinking problem progressed even further, and he had only worked odd jobs across the country. While MK, Gina, and their Aunt Wilma were less than pleased to see the deadbeat back, Diana couldn't resist and welcomed him back into their lives with opened arms. And so the cycle began yet again. MK withdrew the tiniest bit, and those keen on her and her life noticed little changes about the normally genial young lady. But again, she tried to cope. Cope in whatever was she knew best. She learned to suppress her bruised ego and broken feelings in turn for a grin and a great amount of fun. Nobody wanted to hear about her problems, and no one needed to help her. Joe moved his family out to Forest Hills, and MK was taken away from all the kids she knew over the past few years, Simon in particular. She still hates that she let him slip away, but high school was chaotic. Home was chaotic. Diana had slipped back into her habits harder than ever as Joe continued his antics, and the Robinson girls suffered from their parents' destructive behaviors most of all. None of her new friends or classmates knew a thing though. She was just as exuberant as ever. She did turn to new ways of coping though -- partying hard, in particular. Drinking heavily on weekends and moving quickly from boyfriend to boyfriend distracted her enough and never let her classmates, as far as she was concerned, realize what was really going on at home. While MK realized in some sense that it was never healthy to bottle up something as awful as her home situation, she still never relished in the idea of sharing it with others. When she wasn't spending time getting blasted with her friends, she discovered a passion for theater and acting. It began during her freshman year, in a drama elective class, and from that point on, she lived for the stage. Nothing compared to the feeling of herself in the spotlight, slipping into a character. It gave her a true sense of escape from her less than ideal life and let her imagine what her life would be like if she were in someone else's shoes. Theater was what she loved most in life -- more than her friends and family. It proved, time and time again, that it was the one true and constant way to cope for her. MK settled into a routine of theater, boyfriends, parties, and avoiding home, and high school passed by well enough. By her senior year, she had become the star drama student at her school and even snagged a long-term (for her, at least, meaning they stuck together for a few months) boyfriend, Anthony. (Though honestly, he was not the best boyfriend in the world. No, he was never abusive to her, but mistreated others and demeaned her in front of his friends and peers.) She was happy, truthfully, and saw her life going towards a direction she wanted. Of course, that would be when everything hit the fan. Once again, it was bad before good. Gina had graduated high school two years prior and moved onto college, the first in her family to do so. While her parents were adamant that she get a degree, all cards were off the table when she met Jimmy Molina. They met in her freshman philosophy class, and she was immediately head over heels for him. By her junior year (when MK was a senior in high school), she was madly, deeply in love with him. She dropped out of school, married Jimmy, and announced at MK's graduation that she was pregnant with her first child. To say Joe Robinson was unimpressed would be an understatement. He absolutely lost it, hitting and cursing his wife and both his daughters, telling them that they ruined his life and were worthless, wastes of time and air, etc. Maddie Kate had had enough. Gina's pregnancy news shook her to the core, and the idea that she could be tied down as an aunt filled her with fear. What if she could never pursue her dreams of performing on Broadway? Not to mention, she was finally fed up with suffering in silence with her abuse. Two weeks after her high school graduation -- two weeks filled with more violence towards her than in recent years -- MK packed a bag and bolted and kept running and running. She bounced from city to city, staying in shoddy motel rooms or in the bed of men she picked up along the way, until she reached Seattle. She hadn't meant to settle in the rainy city, but something drew her in. Maybe it was the people, so broken like her, or maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was because it was just so vastly different from Queens. Or maybe it was because it was the farthest place possible from her family. Whatever the reason, MK found herself in a dingy, small apartment and living alone at the age of 18, all contact dropped from most people in her past life. Seattle was strange, ridden with vigilantism. She made friends there, best friends that she swore she'd never let in but sneaked into her heart anyway. MK thought herself too damaged to be anyone important, and commitment scared her, but she found so many good people in Seattle. People like Wren Maheu and the girl's boyfriend and countless other kids her age. It surprised her. Her friends grew to be her entire world. One boy, in particular, found his way into her heart. He was her neighbor and one of her closest friends and happened to be a vigilante who saved her not once, but twice. MK never thought she would fall in love, never wanted to. Damaged childhoods filled with destructive relationships would scare any girl away from caring for someone so deeply, but that boy...well, he was different. He saved her life in more ways than one, and after fighting it for a while, she left herself fall. And hard. MK Robinson never felt such overwhelming emotions, but he brought out the best and worst in her, and that was what love was about, wasn't it? And oh, was she in love with him. It was a complete 180 from before -- the girl who was scared of commitment now found herself imagining her life down the line with him. With all her friends. But then remember? Bad before good. The boy, her world, he was killed by one of his enemies, and MK's life shattered around her. She couldn't cope like before. She didn't eat, didn't sleep, could barely breathe. He was gone. She had allowed herself to open up to love, and it was snatched away in cold blood. With Wren gone off god-knows-where and her boy gone, Seattle wasn't much of a home at all anymore. She lasted a week or so without them before she was on the run again with little more than her beloved dog and some keepsakes, including a heart-shaped locket from her boy vigilante that she still wears all the time. For the first time in her life, she ran to her home, just for a little bit. Gina's child was just over one, and MK hadn't met her yet, and she wanted to know how her family was doing. After having her world turned upside down, they seemed to be the one constant in her life. So, the redhead moved back home for a few short months, and nothing went well. Though MK was grown at this point, her father still dominated her and abused her both physically and emotionally. Diana was still a wreck. Gina had left her husband and tried to be strong for her own daughter but struggled immensely. All of it scared the ever-living daylights out of MK. The glimpse of pure, unadulterated happiness in Seattle was a tease, and now she was broken. Shattered. And she couldn't stay. So she left, but this time she stayed in contact, at least with her sister. Over the proceeding years, MK jumped from place to place, picking up little acting gigs and leaving big impacts on people but keeping little contact with people outside of her family. Occasionally, she would drop in back into New York City for work and see her family and, after finally getting in contact with Wren, called her on holidays, but that was it as far as long-term connections go. Since she left Seattle, her life became nothing but drugs and alcohol and sex and coping. Trying to mend the gaping hole torn in her heart. Within the last year or so, her reputation grew worse and worse, but her career skyrocketed. Maddie Kate Robinson, the party girl with the great smile and greater personality. She was "discovered" and soon put into some minor advertising campaigns. All of a sudden, MK was the girl in the magazines that women fantasized about being and men fantasized about being with. And she loved it. It helped distract her from the constant pain in her chest and head. The MK in the public eye was just like the carefree girl who everyone loved, even if the MK behind closed doors continued to fall apart. Her agent (holy shit, she finally had an agent) recommended moving to Las Vegas, where his most prominent and influential clients were located. He also set her up with a side job as a cocktail waitress at the Bellagio in case work was slow. And just as she was packing her things in Los Angeles to move in with Wren in Vegas, she had the sudden urge to stop it all. Stop the fast life and the drinking and the partying and the sleeping around. Maybe go home again, stay with her sister to help with her niece. It was a strange desire, one MK hadn't really faced before, and it confused her a bit. The journal arrived the day before she left for Las Vegas along with its key in a nondescript brown package. Okay, it was weird, but MK had seen stranger things and so she dropped it in her carry-on and jumped on a flight to Vegas the next morning. Maybe, finally, the good was coming to stay. But, she was never so lucky, was she? The first few months in Las Vegas were okay, and she reconnected with many people from her past (which drummed up both good and bad feelings. As time went on, however, her life fell apart quicker than in Seattle. After being kidnapped and held captive for over a week and not dealing with the consequences of that, MK's drinking problem spiraled out of control and developed into a dangerous, destructive mix of drinking, drugs, and self-harm. She fell in love with her vigilante's best friend, but that wasn't healthy either. But, she didn't think she had a problem; at least, that was what convinced herself The redhead was an absolute mess, crashing closer and closer to rock bottom until she overdosed. Now, she's trying to repair her life, to figure out what everything means, but she isn't having very good luck. UPDATE: MK and Adam are now engaged, neither of them really moving towards a wedding but committed enough to put a symbol to it. Shortly following the new year, her sister died in a car accident, and MK gained custody of her five year old niece, Delilah. Currently, there are CPS investigations as are routine, though special attention is being paid given the redhead's past (as far as they know) drug abuse. Journal/Key: iPhone 5S.
